Job Description
General:
The Shift Supervisor is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the refinery. The Shift Supervisor reports to the Refinery Manager and is responsible for the operation of the refinery during his/her particular 12-hour shift.
Summary:
The Shift Supervisor critically views plant operation and makes process changes, or directs those changes, necessary to ensure product quality, safety and environmental integrity of the refinery. The Shift Supervisor works closely with the operators and maintenance personnel to ensure operating targets are met and equipment is functioning properly. Equipment problems shall be reported to the Refinery Manager and work requests written to repair malfunctioning equipment. The Shift Supervisor will see that all process equipment is prepared for repairs by maintenance personnel ensuring their safety during the repair. The Shift Supervisor is also responsible for overseeing the various laboratory tests that indicate product quality and for taking appropriate action based on those tests results. He/she shall maintain a working knowledge of all operating positions, i.e. process operator, stillman, pumper/loader, and deputy weigh master and train operators on his shift to perform those jobs. He/she will assist the refinery manager in operator performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action when necessary.
Responsibilities/Duties:
The Shift Supervisor shall:
- Maintain a daily log of all operation activities on his/her shift, as well as, the daily time record, the daily feedstock/product inventory, and equipment inspection report.
- Be familiar with all the chemicals used in the refinery, the amounts and location and handling procedures outlined in the Material Data Safety Sheets.
- Be knowledgeable in and be responsible for implementing the following procedures when necessary:
Emergency Contingency Plan
Spill Containment and Countermeasure Plan
Accident Investigation Plan
Fire Permit and Confined Space Entry Procedures
Illness Injury Prevention Plan
- Enforce all company policies within the refinery during his/her shift and report any environmental problems promptly to the Refinery Manager, Environmental Engineer or Safety Director.
- Keep work areas clean and free of slipping, falling or tripping debris.
- Learn, follow and enforce safe work practices and safety policies and regulations. Inspect work areas for unsafe conditions. Inspect personal protective equipment to assure it is in proper working order -- periodically and before use. Inspect and prepare equipment and work areas and issues correct permit. Read MSDS forms and applies information and knowledge to safely handle and protect against exposure of hazardous materials. Respond to emergencies in a safe manner. Wear fire retardant clothing and safety equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, fresh air masks and respirators.
- Learn, follow and enforce environmental protection polices and regulations. Prevent chemical and hydrocarbon spills and immediately clean up any spill or other environmental hazard.
- Maintain positive working relationships. Participate in continuing training and certification programs.
- Read processing schedules, laboratory logs and procedures, test results and laboratory recommendations, unit logbooks. Record sample test results on forms and notify other departments of test results by telephone or radio.
- Report malfunctioning equipment and write work requests
Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma/GED Equivalent
Must have good communication skills; Must Speak Read and Write English (Spanish a plus)
Experience: 1-2yrs minimum Refinery Experience
Physical Demands: Physically be able to Lift 50lbs and carry them across 50 yards, climb ladders up to 200ft, work in various out door conditions/environment, exposure to various claimants, able to work in confined space, stand for long periods of time to and from properties to complete projects assigned, sitting for short periods of time while driving company vehicle or while monitoring digital control panels. Pass respiratory fit test to allow face mask compliance, pass an audio (hearing) test as working conditions and environment require working in high levels of noise. Vision- Ability to read and comprehend control tower readings to deciphers adjustments.
