Overview
Industrial instrument technicians consult manufacturer’s manuals to select tests and procedures for instruments that are used for measuring and controlling variables in manufacturing and processing. Example variables include flow, level, temperature, and pressure. |
Responsibilities
- Repair, maintain, calibrate, adjust and install industrial measuring and controlling instrumentation.
- Diagnose faults by inspecting and testing the operation of instruments and control systems and remove or replace defective parts.
- Test and calibrate components and instruments according to manufacturer’s specifications.
- Troubleshoot and tune industrial processes.
- Install and maintain instruments or control equipment and systems to indicate, measure, or record specific aspects of a production process and operating plant.
- Maintain safety fail safe devices in a control system
- Maintain distributed control systems (DCSs) to monitor process variables.
- Exercises supervision over contracted assisted work.
- Knowledge of pneumatics, electro-pneumatics, electricity, and electronics.

- Overtime Work – Able to work overtime as well as on call outs, weekdays/weekends, holidays, etc. as needed.
Physical Demands: Good hand-eye coordination, Physically be able toclimb tower ladders up to 200feet, Lift a min. of 50lbs. Good written and oral communication skills in English.
Other Physical Requirements:
Ability to crouch, kneel, bend or stoop to perform tasks such as checking liquid drains, checking bleeders in lines or opening valves located near the ground.
Ability to use hands, arms and upper body strength to grasp and turn valves, use wrenches and other tools and/or hold on to guard rails while walking and climbing stairs or ladders.
Hearing: Ability to hear detailed telephone and two way radio instructions in the presence of background noise are required.
Environmental Conditions (Physical Surroundings):
This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. 20% of the shift will find you working in the workshop, and 80% of the shift out in the Refinery. This employee is not protected from temperature changes.
Under storm/rain conditions the employee may spend more time in the work shop protected from the weather. However, the employee may spend time outside un-protected as he/she performs essential tasks.
Education: Min. High School Diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of principles and
methods on analysis. Good communication skills; Must Speak Read and Write English
(Spanish a plus), some computer knowledge.
Experience: Mechanical/Instrumentation Practical Experience, Maintenance experience, instrument tech or electro mechanical technician, or electrician. Worked with Process transmitters, control valves, combustible gas monitors, thermocouples, electrical fabrication, tubing, conduit work and wire terminations, I to Ps, DCS (Distributed Control System) Experience, PLC (Programmable logic controllers), PID controller experience, and Cems systems a plus. Honorably separated Military veteran a plus.
